Roof Claim Denied? What to Do Next (and What Not to Do)

A denied roof claim can be frustrating—especially if you can *see* damage. The good news: a denial isn’t always the end of the road.

Here’s a practical next-step list.

First: Don’t panic (and don’t go silent)

Denials can come from:

  • insufficient documentation
  • scope disagreements
  • the carrier attributing damage to wear/tear instead of a storm
  • inspection issues (missed soft-metal hits, missed test squares, etc.)

What to do

1) **Get the denial in writing**

- Ask for the denial letter and the specific reason.

2) **Request the full claim file items**

- Carrier estimate

- Photos

- Adjuster notes (when available)

3) **Document the roof and collateral damage**

- Soft metals (gutters, vents, flashing)

- Window screens

- Siding hits

- Interior leaks (if any)

4) **Get a detailed scope from a qualified roofer**

- Not just a price—ask for a scope and photos.

5) **Ask for a reinspection (with supporting documentation)**

What NOT to do

  • Don’t argue without evidence (it goes nowhere)
  • Don’t rely on one blurry photo
  • Don’t assume “wear and tear” is correct without verifying
